Mark Medoff: Biography

Mark Medoff won a Tony Award for his 1980 play, Children Of A Lesser God. He was nominated for an Academy Award for the film script of Children and for an ACE Award for his HBO Premiere movie, Apology. He won an OBIE Award for his 1973 play, When You Comin Back, Red Ryder?.

He holds degrees from the University of Miami and Stanford, and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Gallaudet University. He is Dramatist in Residence and Professor Emeritus of Theatre Arts at New Mexico State University, where he served on the English and Theatre Arts faculties for twenty-seven years. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Oklahoma and a consultant to the MFA Creative Writing program at the University of New Mexico.

Medoff is the author of twenty-six plays and eleven movies. Among his movies are Clara’s Heart, Off Beat, and City of Joy. He wrote and produced the movie, Homage, based on his stage play, The Homage That Follows. Santa Fe, was co-authored with Andrew Shea. Both Homage and Santa Fe premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

He is a recipient of the Westhafer Award, the highest faculty honor bestowed by New Mexico State University, the Papen Family Award for community service, and the New Mexico Governor's Award for lifetime achievement in the Arts.
