Notes: In 2007 my father passed away, and I found myself thinking about a orchestral work I had written in 1984 titled Cortège. I looked at that score again, and I saw several ways I could increase its expressive intensity. So I withdrew Cortege and created a new work based on its materials. I cut a middle section and treated the remaining music as a sketch. I reworked it measure by measure, added a new ending, and I find the resulting work far more expressive and satisfying.
The title comes from a poem by 17th-century poet Robert Herrick.
